Des Moines’ Global Footprint: Local Events with International Impact

Des Moines, Iowa, may be nestled in the heartland of America, but its influence extends far beyond national borders. Our city has become a hub for events that draw international attention, fostering global connections and discussions right here at home.

World Food Prize Foundation: A Global Gathering

Celebrating 15 years at its headquarters in the historic former Des Moines Public Library, the World Food Prize Foundation continues to address global food insecurity. Each year, this organization hosts a three-day event that attracts leaders from around the world, earning comparisons to the World Economic Forum in Davos, but with a focus on agriculture. The foundation’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its building’s features, including geothermal wells and rooftop solar panels. To mark its 15-year milestone, a casino night fundraiser is planned to support the facility’s maintenance and preservation.

Global Insurance Symposium: Shaping the Future of Insurance

Des Moines’ status as a global insurance hub is highlighted by the annual Global Insurance Symposium (GIS). The 2026 symposium, themed “Insurance in an ERA of Possibilities,” is scheduled for April 14–15 at the Iowa Events Center. This event brings together over 500 industry professionals, regulators, and innovators from around the world to discuss the evolving landscape of insurance and explore new opportunities shaping the industry’s future.

CelebrAsian: Honoring Refugee Contributions

In 2025, Des Moines hosted CelebrAsian, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Iowa’s efforts to welcome Southeast Asian refugees following the Vietnam War. This event highlighted the significant contributions of refugees to our state’s growth and diversity. Many individuals who resettled in Iowa have become community leaders, entrepreneurs, and government officials, exemplifying resilience and positive impact. CelebrAsian, organized by the Iowa Asian Alliance, featured ceremonies, exhibitions, and luncheons honoring these contributions under the theme “50 Years: Ray of Freedom.”

These events underscore Des Moines’ role in facilitating global conversations and connections. By hosting such gatherings, our city not only showcases its hospitality but also positions itself as a key player in addressing international challenges and opportunities.
